Terms: community names
The most well-known community name is LGBT. Over the years, it has evolved to LGBTQIAP+ as more identities become more well-known to the public. In short, the longer acronym stands for lesbian-gay-bisexual-questioning/queer-intersex-asexual/aromantic-pansexual. Although this is inclusive, it quickly becomes a mouthful. Some people shorten it to LGBT+ to save time.
Other acronyms you may encounter are MOGAI. Which stands for Marginalized Orientations, Gender Alignments and Intersex. Or MOGII which stands for Marginalized Orientations, Gender Identities, Intersex. These are great blanket terms for those who aren't dyadic*, straight, and/or cisgender**.
Some people use GSRM which stands for Gender, Sexuality, and Romantic Minorities. There's controversy due it being coined by Lars Ullerstam, author of Erotic Minorities, who included necrophilia and pedophilia under sexual minorities. There are also people within the kink community who believe they fall under sexual minorities. If you encounter someone using this acronym, you may want to exercise distance until it's clear who they're including in the acronym.
Outside of acronyms, queer is occasionally used for the community. Queer basically means someone is not heterosexual and/or not cisgender. The word has a history of being a slur and is still occasionally used in that manner. However, some people identify as queer and are reclaiming the word. Out of respect, if you wish to self-identify as queer, that is okay, but one should not impose the identity on others.
These different acronyms have their advantages, disadvantages, and history. Some people may be comfortable using one, but not the other.
*dyadic: someone who is not intersex **cisgender: someone who identifies with the gender they were assigned at both.
